Hello! An Update from Pterosail

Posted by John MacTaggart on 25 Jan, 2012

Howdy folks. I wanted to give everyone an update. First I’d like to thank those of you who have been supportive of Pterosail's development. From idea, to development, to reality ... its all been an amazing adventure. I can’t believe it's been nearly six years since my father had the inspiration to use a jib-sail mounted on a trike to sail the roads. Since then, we've learned quite a few things. Firstly, wind power on public roads is for real - it's not just a dream. It's safe and a lot of fun! When the conditions are right there's simply no better feeling than letting the wind pulling you effortlessly. I remember the first time we put our design to test in California; everything worked wonderfully. Sailors all know the feeling. That’s the kind of excitement that we'd like to share with others.

I can't explain how much fun it was to develop the Pterosail. Our design was certainly unique, in fact we secured two U.S. patents. Development of the Pterosail required a constantly think "outside of the box". We thrived on the innovation front. We spent a lot of time designing a “kit” to mount onto existing recumbent trikes. It sounded like a good idea; but the reality was challenging. There are lots of different trikes out there. Although we succeeded in building a Pterosail kit - we eventually learned that building our own custom trike from the ground up provided a better sailing experience. The latest generation of the Pterosail has a fully customized and designed by us.

On a more personal note, right as we finalized the latest generation of the Pterosail, I was recalled to active duty and spent nearly a year in Kandahar, Afghanistan. I was glad to serve but it was another delay in the development of Pterosail. Last year I turned the big three-zero and wanted to celebrate by doing something big. I decided that taking the newly designed Pterosail cross-country would be that something. It was an ambitious goal; sail from coast-to-coast on a Pterosail. This had never been done - but we did it! I can’t but feel humbled that I had the opportunity to take my father's concept of wind travel - and literally go from coast-to-coast. I miss meeting folks on that journey - and explaining our technology, including the overhead solar panels and regenerative electrical system. The trip was an amazing experience; one that I'll never forget.

Unfortunately, my enthusiasm was short-lived. As I was traveling cross-country, my father's health began to deteriorate. The day I finished the cross-country trip by dipping my tires into the Pacific Ocean in St. Augustine, FL I received a phone call with bad news; Pop was admitted to a hospital in Chicago with heart failure. A month later he was fortunate enough to undergo heart transplant surgery and received a new heart. Our family and friends were incredibly supportive during his struggle to recover, but unfortunately, it didn’t work out. My father, Phil MacTaggart, and the inventor of the Pterosail passed away in May. The past year has been a tough year for our family and for Pterosail. So now what? Well, life goes on as does the business. We plan to continue the dream my father had; to share the joys of sailing and cycling in the great outdoors. We’re excited to announce that we're in the process of relocating Pterosail Trike Systems to Houston, Texas. Stay tuned!
